The Wedding of Q and U

Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to phonically pronounce the consonant Q and the short vowel U.  It's the study of phonics for young children everywhere to learn that together the two letter make one sound (kw), but to always know them as separate letters of the alphabet.  It is important to remember that the vowel U can stand alone to speak her own sound as short

vowel u or long vowel u. 

All the letters of the alphabet were in attendance as well as the digraphs and combinations.  Then all eyes turned to the teacher as she directed the letters to sing The Alphabet Song.

"Consonant Q do you take U as your vowel to be pronounced as one sound?"

"Vowel U do you take Q to be the consonant that proceeds you in all words spelled with Q?"

"By the certification from the State of Texas, I now pronounce you as one sound (KW).  Let the words for phonics flow easily for young readers everywhere."

Kid's Day on the Farm

We will have one final field trip to a real farm to experience "Kid's Day On The Farm" followed by a picnic.  This farm experience will go along with our science unit we are studying this six weeks.  Please see the parent note that I sent home for details or message me.  Your child will need a sack lunch, two drinks and tennis shoes.  You are welcome to follow us to the farm and the park.  We are leaving at 8:40.  Bring your camera!!

If it rains the field trip is canceled.

Happy Mother's Day

To all our kindergarten moms, you really are special for raising such precious children.  I love them all!

Making Mud Pies

As a conclusion to our Earth Science unit we made mud pies!  I must say that it was fun for the students to make and eat.  Eating a worm was the best part for some students. 
(I will appolgize now for the sideways pictures.  I thought I had them turned before importing them to this blog.  SORRY!)

Math Centers

This week we spent time learning to estimate and measure height.  Students estimated first on our big chart.

Working together in small groups students went to work.  After measuring each other the results were written on the chart.  This activity was followed up the next day estimating and measuring classroom objects. 

We also spent time introducing subtraction this week and working in math centers.
